Since its establishment in 1945, the United Nations has cast a long shadow across global affairs. Its 60th anniversary provided analysts across the globe with an opportunity to reflect on its past successes as well as its future challenges. To mark the occasion, the Institute for Global Dialogue organised a conference, held in Pretoria, at which scholars and diplomats of international repute and with significant experience of and expertise in UN matters cast a reflective eye over its manifold accomplishments, but also ruminated on its unmet ambitions, un trodden pathways, and future challenges. Special attention was paid to the UN's changing agenda in respect of Africa. The edited conference proceedings are encapsulated in this volume. It is hoped that it will help policy-makers, analysts, and other actors in Africa and elsewhere to engage with the world body and its mission at a time when the need for concerted action by the international community on a range of crucial issues is as urgent as ever.
